Call For Entries: Suffolk Landmarks and Icons

Suffolk County Historical Society Call For EntriesThe Suffolk County Historical Society has announced a call for entries for a juried photography competition that will take place in connection with a new photography exhibition. The juried photography exhibition, entitled “Suffolk County’s Landmarks & Icons,” will open with a special reception on November 13, 2009, from 6-8pm, and will be on display at the Society (300 West Main St., Riverhead) through December 12, 2009. Jeff Schamberry, director of photography at Newsday, will serve as the competition’s juror, the winners of which will be announced at the opening reception.

The exhibition will consist of current photographic work, by contemporary photographers, that depicts Suffolk County’s landmarks and icons – both natural and man made – juxtaposed with a sampling of historical photographs from the Society’s collection.

The competition is open to all artists. All work must be framed, wired and ready to hang. Framed photos are not to exceed 16” x 24”. Entries without wire will not be accepted. Limit three works per artist; there is a $5 non-refundable fee for each work submitted. All work must be received at the Suffolk County Historical Society between November 3 - 6; 12:30 - 4:30 pm (labeled with artist name, address, phone, and title).

Suffolk County abounds with enduring sights and symbols that evoke individual responses and reflections. Whether famous and recognizable or humble and personal, Suffolk County’s special places can be transformed by events and memories. The Suffolk County Historical Society invites amateur and professional photographers to participate in this exhibit and competition by sharing their favorite images.

Christie Brinkley & Peter Cook Settle Out Of Court

Christie Brinkley & Peter Cook Leaving the Courthouse in Riverhead. Photos: Lisa Wagner/Splash News

Christie Brinkley and Peter Cook have finally called a truce in the last of their long running courthouse battles. This morning the feuding exes appeared in State Supreme Court in Riverhead where they presented Justice Mark Cohen with a mutually beneficial settlement agreement. Last minute negotiations between Brinkley, Cook and their legal teams ran well into the early hours of Tuesday morning with both sides hammering out conditions of the settlement agreement before they were due in court. The settlement addressed custody and visitation issues concerning the couple's two children, Jack, 14, and Sailor Lee, 11. The specifics of the agreement, which were accepted by the judge, were not made public.

Despite a few final digs outside of the courthouse, Brinkley reminding the press that a court psychiatrist had labeled Peter a "narcissist" and Cook slamming Christie for "parental interference," both sides seemed to be pleased with the agreement.

It had been reported that both Brinkley and Cook were looking to have each other thrown in jail for violating the terms of their original custody and confidentiality agreements, but Brinkley assured one reporter as she left the courthouse in a blue trench coat and Ray Bans, "I never said that."  Brinkley in fact did not exercise her right to hold Cook in contemp of their original agreement.

As for Cook, he told BlogHamptons he's looking forward to spending time with his kids and "leaving this media circus behind."

Sotomayor Goes Wine Tasting at Macari Vineyards

Judge Sonia Sotomayor Visits Macari Vineyards in Mattituck

No sooner did we post our "Tweet of the Day" when this gem popped up on our Twitter feed from @MacariVineyards:

MacariVineyards on TwitterSonia Sotomayor just walked out of the tasting
room with her hands full of Macari Cab Franc!

Tuesday, July 28th from web

Judge Sotomayor may have been at Macari Vineyards, one of our favorite wineries on the North Fork, located in Mattituck, to celebrate the support of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Earlier in the day, the committee approved President Obama's nomination of federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor, by a 13 to 6 vote. The committee will now send their recommendation to the full Senate, which is expected to confirm the Judge's appointment to the nation's highest court next week. Once confirmed, Judge Sonia Sotomayor will become the first Latino member of the U.S. Supreme Court and our third female Justice. As South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham noted after Tuesday's historic vote, “We are two hundred and something years old as a nation. This is the first Latino woman in the history of the United States to be selected for the Supreme Court. Now that is a big deal.” Senator Graham was the only Republican to vote in favor of Sotomayor. (As a side note to Senator Graham; the United States of America celebrated its 233rd birthday on July 4, 2009.)

We wonder if the Judge meandered out onto the stone and timber deck off the Macari Tasting Room to take in the views of the 180 acre vineyard with her Cabernet Franc - which the vineyard describes as "a big vibrant red, with a bouquet satiated with spice, green olives, and cloves. Full bodied and bursting with chewiness and red fruit mid-palate. The finish has an earthy quality with well structured and sweet tannins, and a lingering, enticing finish."

I think I'll have to add that to my own tasting list next time I'm out at there! We have a call into the Macari Family to try and get little more scoop on this 'supreme' visit. We'll be sure to update as soon we hear back.

On Your Way Out: Great South Bay Music Festival

The Great South Bay Music FestivalBetween Manhattan and Montauk lies a great stretch of land that holds a hell of lot more than just the Long Island Expressway. This weekend, on your way to or from the Hamptons, why not stop by The Great South Bay Music Festival. The annual festival will kick off tonight at Shorefront Park in Patchogue and will feature 35 acts on 4 different stages during this weekend long celebration of music and the arts. Long Island's homegrown rocker Eddie Money will wrap-up the festival on Sunday night with a live performance on the Blue Point Brews Stage at 8:30 PM. Two tickets to paradise, please!

In addition to the amazing array of live bands that will be performing throughout the weekend, the festival has also added late night stand-up comedy to the line-up this year, on Friday and Saturday nights from 11 to midnight. Look for "Late Nite Madness" in the Cultural Tent, featuring the hottest rising stars of comedy.

The Great South Bay Music Festival is the largest three day, "American Themed" music, art & cultural family event on Long Island. In keeping with its American themed intentions, one of the highlights of the festival is the "Patriots Zone". The main feature of the Patriots Zone is their "living" Civil War Encampment. The celebrated "Brooklyn Chasseurs" of the 14th New York State Militia will live on site for three days just as they did during the Civil War. Donned in authentic uniforms, living in tents, and cooking at the campfire, the Brooklyn Chasseurs will hold drills and Civil War re-enactments throughout the weekend to transport you and your children back in time to the 1800's.

Just in case 35 live acts, two nights of live comedy and a civil war re-enactment aren't enough for you, let's talk about the food...and the beer! The food court at the Great South Bay Music Festival is second to none with some of the finest locally grown and caught fare around. From the roasted corn to the fresh seafood, it’s a treat for the senses all weekend. Of course there will be plenty of sinfully fried and candied temptations for your enjoy as well. After all, what would a NY festival be without a few Zepole's? And last but certainly not least, Blue Point Brewing Company will be on hand all weekend with all of the Blue Point Summer Ale and award-winning Toasted Lager you can drink!

The party starts tonight with the first 11 acts hitting their respective stages between 5 and 10 PM, a Fireworks display after dark, and three comedians kicking off Late Nite Madness at 11. Be sure to visit greatsouthbaymusicfestival.com for a full schedule of events.

Thank You Daily Show, This Should Help A Lot

After watching this clip from The Daily Show with John Stewart, words literally escape me. The wife beater, the "gun show," the state bird...all of it has left me speechless. These three ridiculous cartoon characters should have to pay compensation to every Long Island resident that not only owns a shirt, but also knows that Staten Island is not a state!!

And I'm sorry guys, but we're not buying the "I was acting" excuse you pitched to the Long Island Press either. The only outdated stereotypes missing from this segment were Joey Buttafuco pants and a John Gotti reference! Nice work.
