Sam Champion OK After Car Crash

Good Morning America's Sam Champion is recovering this weekend from a multi-vehicle accident on the Long Island Expressway. Champion, who was heading out to the East End after Friday's show, was a passenger in a car that slammed into a jackknifing tractor trailer on the LIE between exits 39 and 40. "I was looking down and Brian, the driver, said, 'Look out.' He hit the brakes really hard. You could see the front of the truck coming at the car," Champion told Channel 7 News. "I remember thinking, 'This is bad. This is bad. This is really, really bad!"
Champion's harrowing experience, which occurred shortly before 11 a.m., resulted in only minor scrapes and bruises for the weatherman and his driver, due in part to the fact that both were wearing seatbelts. "It was scary, but an amazing relief that we were both okay."
East bound traffic was closed for four hours as workers cleaned up debris from the scene.
Sam Champion will have little time to count his lucky stars as he is due down in the Gulf Coast tomorrow to report live for Good Morning America on Hurricane Gustav.
